Cyclosporine is a cyclic polypeptide with 11 amino acids obtained from a fungus. Cyclosporine specifically inhibits proliferation of T- lymphocyte cells, production of interleukin and cytokines. In cell mediated immunity antigen is processed and presented to helper T-cells. This secretes interleukins and cytokines that cause proliferation cytotoxic lymphocytes. The mature cytotoxic lymphocytes (killer cells) lyse antigen-containing cells. Restasis selectively suppresses cell-mediated immunity and prevents graft rejection. Cyclosporine suppresses the responses of primed helper T-cells also and hence used in the treatment of autoimmune diseases. Restasis does not affect the bone marrow and reticuloendothelial system. Cyclosporine is more active when administered before antigen exposure.
